Alley gating

Alley gating

Commsec Ironworks have undertaken the design, manufacture and installation of over 500 individual alley gating units. This study looks at some of the schemes.

The concept of alley gating is simple. Much of the housing stock in the north of England is arranged in terraces with substantial networks of entrances and alleys at the rear of properties. This provides useful access to the property but has also been used for less welcome criminal activity, including burglary, anti-social behaviour and fly-tipping. Alley gating minimises these activities by placing gating at the access points to these networks. Each of the relevant residents is given access by means of a key, which is usually part of a masterkey system under the control of the property owners or local authority. Aesthetic sensibilities are a major factor in designing alley gating schemes, as the schemes are situated in residential areas. As well as designing less intimidating but still secure gates, Commsec Ironworks work hard to engage with the local community to beautify the alleys and entrances and to use the gates as an essential part of this.
